The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department owns more than 100 Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) throughout the state, totaling over 133,000 acres. Each area is open to the public and offers a unique diversity of native plants and animals. The WMAs are enjoyed by the public for hiking, wildlife observation, bird watching, and educational opportunities. Many hunters, anglers, and trappers favor these areas, as all Vermont WMAs are open to regulated hunting, trapping, and fishing.
Agency Facilities works closely with the Fish and Wildlife Department to provide engineering consultation and design services for their many WMAs. These projects range in size and service, depending on the particular needs of the WMA. Examples of projects include earthen dike restoration at Sandbar, culvert replacements at Little Otter Creek and West Mountain, and parking area upgrades at Mallett’s Creek. These improvements help preserve the Wildlife Management Areas, while also creating more accessibility so visitors can enjoy Vermont’s native species and habitats.
