Small Quantity Generator (SQG)

Small quantity generators (SQGs) are subject to more stringent requirements than very small quantity generators (VSQGs), but less stringent than large quantity generators (LQGs). SQGs must also comply with requirements for recordkeeping, waste inventory and inspections, personnel training, emergency preparedness and prevention, and more stringent requirements for on-site waste storage. SQG requirements are specified under Section 7-307 of Subchapter 3 of the VHWMR.

Small quantity generators can:
  • generate greater than or equal to 220 pounds but less than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste per month;
  • generate less than 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste in a calendar month;
  • generate less than 220 pounds of any residue or contaminated soil, waste, or other debris resulting from the cleanup of a discharge of any acutely hazardous waste in a calendar month;
  • accumulate up to 13,200 pounds of hazardous waste onsite.
Notification Requirement:

A small quantity generator shall re-notify the Secretary starting in 2021 and every four years thereafter using the Hazardous Waste Handler Site Identification Form (EPA Form 8700-12). This re-notification shall be submitted by September 1st of each year in which re-notifications are required.
