4 Steps to Comply: Vermont's Dental Mercury Law

Vermont dental offices are required to comply with environmental best management practices and to install amalgam separators in their wastewater discharge systems. See our mercury laws and key compliance requirements below.

1. Install and maintain amalgam separator in wastewater discharge

Use and maintain an approved amalgam separator
Store amalgam waste in sealed, labeled containers

2. Dispose of amalgam waste properly: EPA site ID registration

Register as an hazardous waste collection site (see registration form above)
- Annual $75 renewal charge due on April 1st of each year
Each site must have a different EPA site ID number
- New submissions required for location and ownership changes

3. Complete Vermont’s self-certification of dental BMPs compliance*

Complete form by January 31st every odd year; next deadline: 2025

*IMPORTANT: Orthodontists, periodontists, endodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons are NOT required to file a self-certification form or install an amalgam separator.

4. Complete federal reporting requirement*

One-time reporting requirement (included in self-certification form above) UNLESS:
- New location
- New ownership

* IMPORTANT: Endodontists, are NOT exempt from the Federal Rule, only from the Vermont Requirements.
