Sonia Howlett, Water Quality Specialist for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets, will discuss a new Vermont Pay-for-Phosphorus Program. This program, which will be accepting applications in Fall 2021, introduces a new approach to improve land stewardship on farmland and water quality by using a performance-based payment model.
The Payment-for-Phosphorus Program will accelerate agricultural water quality improvements with new funding and strategy for incentivizing and valuing farmer’s agricultural land stewardship efforts. Sonia will give a brief overview of the historical background on this approach to conservation, the research being done to prepare, and how the program will be implemented.
