About the Survey

Contacts and directions to our office

Per Statute ( Title 10, Chapter 7) the Geological Survey (aka Geology and Mineral Resources Division) conducts research related to the geology, mineral resources and topography of the state.

We provide information, aid and advice relating to rock or mineral deposits suitable for building and infrastructure (roads, septic, water) and provide technical information and geologic expertise to persons conducting regulatory programs for the State.

The State Geologist manages studies with strong geologic components such as those focused on groundwater resources, geology and health (naturally-occurring geochemical elements), physical hazards and sustainable physical systems.

Review of projects for Act 250 Criteria 9D and 9E, Vermont's Land Use and Development law, is an activity that recognizes the importance of earth and mineral resources and environmental protection and reclamation.

One means of providing aid and advice is through published reports which are prepared and presented on-line for easy access by the public. A library of old and new information is maintained and is now (2010) digital.

In the event of any significant discovery of hydrocarbons in the State, the Geological Survey provides geologic services for the natural Gas and Oil Resources Board.
